On the handgun side, Ramshot’s ZIP powder has been a great choice for 9mm Luger, .38 Special and .45 ACP. It burns clean — much cleaner than some old standby pistol powders — and it gives good velocity with low charge weights, extending your shooting dollar.
As with all reloading information, but as especially important with .38 Super loads for IPSC competition, use caution in developing loads for your gun(s) from this data: start powder loads down 10% (or more) and work up to the power factor you are seeking. These loads are arranged first by bullet weight and type (jacketed or lead), and then by ... 2400 will produce poor results in the .38 spl (my opinion), it would be a crying shame to use a very good magnum powder like 2400 is .38 spl rounds that at best would be sub-par. I second the suggestion to see about trading it off. For handloading, the .38 Special is extremely versatile. Since its inception more than a century ago, between available guns, bullets, powders and reloading equipment, there is no better way to start handloading. The .38 Special provides a no stress adventure into the hobby of reloading.

Aug 20, 2015 · The Vihtavuori manual lists one outstanding powder for the .38 Super: N105 Super Magnum. For example, it claims to push a 124 grain bullet to 1501 fps in a 5.5" barrel. Naturally, it was included in the test. The Sierra manual lists several powders that produce high velocities. While Power Pistol has significant muzzle flash at standard 38 Special pressures, I have noticed significantly reduced muzzle flash at +P pressure using 158gr LSWC-HP-GC bullets. Mar 14, 2014 · 38 S&W was a black powder, then smokeless powder load designed to put out about 100 foot-lbs of energy, as opposed to ~ 300 ft-lbs for 38 special. N105 Super Magnum: This special powder has a burn- ing rate between N350 and N110. It is especially devel- oped for handgun cartridges with heavy bullets and/or large case volume. Reloading data is currently available for 9 x 21mm,.38 Super Auto,.357 Magnum,.40 S&W, 10mm Auto,.44 Remington Magnum and.45 Winchester Magnum. For .38, lots of powders work well. I've used Hodgdon CFE-Pistol, Alliant Bullseye, Hodgdon HP-38 (or Winchester 231, which is exactly the same powder), Hodgdon Titegroup. All of them work well, but I probably prefer HP-38 or Bullseye. For 9 mm, a lot of powders work, but the best is Power Pistol.
